JS TutorialLesson #15

JavaScript Comparison

Comparison operators are used to compare two values.

Comparison Operators

Comparison operators are used to compare two values.

Comparison operators always return true or false.

Given that x = 5, the table below explains the comparison operators:

OperatorDescriptionComparingReturns
==equal tox == 8falseTry it
x == 5trueTry it
x == "5"trueTry it
===equal value and equal typex === 5trueTry it
x === "5"falseTry it
!=not equalx != 8trueTry it
!==not equal value or not equal typex !== 5falseTry it
x !== "5"trueTry it
x !== 8trueTry it

Comparison operators can be used in conditional statements to compare values and take action depending on the result:

Example

Example Code

javascript
Try it Yourself
if (age "John" | false | [Try it ](tryit.asp?filename=tryjs_comparison_24) |
| 2 == "John" | false | [Try it ](tryit.asp?filename=tryjs_comparison_25) |
| "2"   "12" | true | [Try it ](tryit.asp?filename=tryjs_comparison_27) |
| "2" == "12" | false | [Try it ](tryit.asp?filename=tryjs_comparison_28) |

When comparing two strings, "2" will be greater than "12".

Alphabetically 1 is less than 21.

To secure a proper result, variables should be converted to the proper type before comparison:

### Example

javascript age = Number(age);

if (isNaN(age)) {

voteable = "Input is not a number";

} else {

voteable = (age < 18) ? "Too young" : "Old enough";

} ```
